Biodynamic Body-Psychotherapy
Biodynamic work is based on respect for the human individual - for both
the potential of a person and also for that person’s current life choices.
We work to support the natural movement towards health and to draw
body, mind and soul back towards alignment by using body awareness,
expression, verbal understanding and touch.
The concepts and principles of biodynamic work to be discussed
in the course include:
• The biological cycle of emotional arousal and its physiological and
psychological regulation as the cycle is completed
• The consequences of interrupting this cycle before its completion
leading to less than optimal development
Biodynamic Body Psychotherapy was developed by Gerda Boyesen, the
Norwegian psychologist and physiotherapist and was inspired mainly by:
• Scandinavia’s long psychiatric tradition, which includes touch
• The work of Wilhelm Reich
• The neuro-muscular massage techniques of Adel Bulow-Hansen
• The James-Lange theory of emotion and
Cannon’s theory of homeostasis
• Gerda Boyesen’s own clinical observations
Recent scientific developments in understanding the independent
functioning of the digestive system as a secondary brain and recognition
of the function of the 10th parasympathetic nerve, the vagus, in
regulating the autonomic nervous system and emotions are congruent
with Boyesen’s hypothesis of the psycho-physiological regulation of
emotional stress through ‘psycho-peristalsis’ in the digestive system and
through the ‘vagus escape’.
Further progress in neuroscience, medicine, psychology and
quantum physics have created waves of insight which are now further
underpinning the empirical understanding, including a scientific
understanding of how the right touch and skin to skin contact can
support resilience and help in the process of healing of attachment
disturbances. This supporting scientific evidence will be presented during
the course.
The Seminars
The seminars will be chaired by Dr. Elya Steinberg (MD) and will include
a theoretical and experiential presentation, followed by discussion on the
potential relevance and application to participants’ own clinical work and
case history.
