Choosing a Biodynamic Body Psychotherapist
How to choose a therapist?
If you are new to psychotherapy, here are a few guidelines to bear in mind. As the therapeutic relationship is the basis on which the healing work can take place, it is important to choose a therapist you feel comfortable with. Most practitioners will be happy to provide information over the phone so you can ask further questions about the way they work, their availability and fee (some therapists may offer a sliding scale or concessions) before you book for an initial interview.
The initial interview is an opportunity for you to explore further whether this therapeutic approach is suitable for you and is not a commitment for you nor the therapist . It is a way of assessing whether working together might be fruitful. It lasts usually one hour, in which you will be able to discuss your personal issues and expectations about the therapy, inquire further into how this therapy could help, as well as practical issues such as the frequency of sessions, the therapist's policy about cancellations etc.
You may need time to think things over. You do not have to decide right away. However, if it feels right, you may decide to start working together. Some therapists offer an initial small contract of 5 or 6 sessions before deciding whether to continue on a longer term basis.
If you do not feel comfortable for any reason but think this way of working might be for you, you may like to have initial sessions with one or two other therapists. The therapeutic space must be a safe and supportive environment in which you can feel free to explore your personal issues and allow your deeper self to unfold.
